SENIOR PHYSICAL AI ENGINEER
DEXTEROUS MANIPULATION
Join our engineering team to advance robotics technology.
LOCATION
Viseu, Portugal

EMPLOYMENT TYPE
PERMANET
What You'll Do
You will design and train the AI policies; the Robotics Engineering team handles real-time control integration and safety-critical execution on hardware. As a key technical pillar, you will drive the technical direction of the end-to-end machine learning pipeline, design advanced neural network policies, and elevate the technical capabilities of the wider AI engineering group to ensure the robot can safely and precisely manipulate unstructured objects.
KEY RESPONSABILITIES
You will contribute to a broad and exciting set of responsibilities, including:
Policy Architecture & Execution
-
Design and drive the technical implementation of Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Imitation Learning (IL) policies for dexterous, bimanual grasping, establishing the coding and training standards for all related projects.
Perception Integration
-
Implement vision-conditioned and tactile-conditioned control models (e.g., Vision-Language-Action models), providing architectural guidance to ensure scalable integration with changing environments
Sim-to-Real Oversight
-
Develop high-fidelity physics simulations (e.g., Isaac Lab, MuJoCo) and establish rigorous, repeatable sim2real transfer protocols to ensure robust deployment across the group's initiatives
Performance Optimization & Code Quality
-
Optimize heavy AI models for edge compute hardware e.g. NVIDIA Jetson and conduct comprehensive code and architecture reviews to maintain strict low-latency and performance benchmarks.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
-
Education: Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, or a related field.
-
Experience: 5+ years of experience deploying vision-based manipulation algorithms on real hardware, with a demonstrated ability to foster technical excellence and guide complex ML projects from concept to deployment.
Technical Skills
-
Programming: Advanced proficiency in Python and modern C++ for high-performance robotics pipelines.
Mindset & Soft Skills
-
Excellent problem-solving, debugging and analytical skills.
-
Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
-
Curiosity, creativity and a drive to push boundaries in robotics.
In addition to technical skills, we value individuals who are team players, effective communicators, and problem solvers. If you are ready to take on new challenges and drive innovation in the field of robotics, we want to hear from you.
WHO IS THIS ROLE FOR
-
You have trained RL or IL policies and deployed them on real physical robots, not only in simulation or on benchmark tasks.
-
You can move fluidly between designing a model architecture and understanding how that model will actually behave on real hardware.
-
You want to shape the core AI capability of a small team's platform, not implement someone else's fixed research agenda.
Who This Role Is Not Primarily For
-
This role is not primarily focused on simulation-only research with no real hardware deployment, classical robotics controls or integration work without ML policy training experience (that sits with the Robotics Engineering role), or computer vision work that doesn't extend into RL or policy training specifically. Candidates from these areas may still be relevant if they also have significant hands-on experience training and deploying manipulation policies on real robots
LOCATION, WORKING MODEL & PRATICAL DETAILS
-
Location: Viseu, Portugal. On-site, Monday–Friday, with a genuine flexible-hours culture (no time-tracking). Remote considered only case-by-case for exceptional candidates with proven real-hardware deployment experience.
-
Visa: EU/EEA candidates only at this time; unable to sponsor visas outside the EU.
-
Language: English required; team is transitioning to full-English operation.
-
Relocation: Practical support available (visa guidance, help finding accommodation, contract translation); does not cover flights or full relocation costs.
